Hospital Policies
At Markham Woods Animal Hospital, we are committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care in a safe and supportive environment. Below is an overview of our hospital policies to ensure the best experience for both you and your pet.
Exam Policy
To provide any prescription medication or veterinary service, a valid Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) is required, as defined by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). This means your pet must have had a physical exam by one of our veterinarians within the past year.
Without a current exam, we are unable to provide services such as vaccines, lab work, surgeries, or products like prescription diets and heartworm preventatives.
Heartworm Policy
Following the American Heartworm Society’s guidelines, we require annual heartworm testing for dogs. We also recommend consistent monthly heartworm prevention to protect against this serious and potentially fatal disease.
To receive heartworm prevention, your dog must:
- Be up to date on a heartworm test
- Have been examined by one of our veterinarians in the last year
- Have a consistent history of heartworm preventative use
If you have any questions about heartworm disease or our policy, please don’t hesitate to call us at (407) 682-3233.
Medication Refill Policy
To request a new prescription or refill, please call our office at (407) 682-3233. All medications must be reviewed and approved by a veterinarian, so please allow up to 2 business days for processing.
- We recommend calling 5 days in advance if there is a Holiday upcoming.
Leash & Carrier Policy
For everyone’s safety, we ask that:
- All dogs be on a secure leash or in a carrier (flexi-leads must remain locked and shortened).
- All cats are to be in a secure carrier or on a leash.
If needed, we’re happy to provide a temporary leash for your visit.
Appointment Policy
Our hospital operates primarily by appointment to allow adequate time for each patient. While emergencies will always take priority, we strive to stay on schedule and appreciate your patience.
Please arrive 5 minutes early for your appointment and bring a fecal sample if requested.
While we do not charge a cancellation fee at this time, unless there are repeat cancellations, we kindly ask that you provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment.
Disease Prevention Policy
To maintain a safe and healthy environment, all hospitalized or day boarded pets must be current on core vaccinations and free of internal and external parasites.
Required Vaccinations:
- Dogs: Rabies, Distemper, Bordetella, and Canine Influenza
- Cats: Rabies and Feline Distemper (FVRCP)
If your pet is found to have parasites (e.g., fleas, ticks, roundworms, hookworms), treatment will be provided for a minimal fee.
