Grim chasing the bunny

Valentine’s Day the FAST Way!

This year, Dr. Crainick and her amazing Mudi, Grim, skipped the chocolates on February 14th and headed to Dog Sports Unlimited in New Smyrna for something way more exciting — a Fast CAT Introduction Class!

And let’s just say… Grim was "born" to run.

What is Fast CAT?

Fast CAT (Coursing Ability Test) is an AKC sport where dogs run one at a time in a straight 100-yard dash chasing a lure (a white plastic bag that zips down the line).

It’s simple, safe, and a ton of fun! Your dog’s speed is timed electronically, and they can even earn official AKC titles based on their miles-per-hour averages. Yes, your dog can literally earn bragging rights for being fast!

Fast CAT is:

  • Fantastic physical exercise
  • Incredible mental stimulation
  • A confidence booster
  • A safe outlet for prey drive
  • Great bonding time between you and your dog

DSU’s Fast CAT Introduction Class for Beginners is a full TWO-hour hands-on experience designed to build confidence for both dogs and their humans.

They walk you through:

  • How Fast CAT works
  • How to safely release and catch your dog
  • Proper handling techniques
  • What to expect at real events
  • And plenty of practice runs!

It’s the perfect starting point if you’re curious but not sure where to begin.

For high-energy breeds like the Mudi (a Hungarian herding breed known for athleticism, intelligence, and speed), it’s especially rewarding. Mudi's thrive when they have a job to do — and chasing a lure at full speed definitely qualifies!

But the best part? Fast CAT isn’t just for herding breeds. Almost ANY dog can participate — mixed breeds included!

How Do You Start?

  • Make sure your dog is healthy and cleared for activity.
  • Find a beginner class like the one at Dog Sports Unlimited.
  • Practice recalls and short bursts of running.

Have FUN!

That’s it!

We love seeing our clients explore healthy, enriching activities with their dogs. If you’ve been looking for something new to try — this might be it!
