What Is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses harmless sound waves to create real-time images of your pet's internal organs. Unlike X-rays, which primarily show bones and the size or shape of organs, ultrasound allows us to see organs in motion and evaluate their internal structure. This makes it one of the most valuable tools available for diagnosing many illnesses.
Because ultrasound is painless, does not use radiation, and often requires only gentle restraint, it is a safe and comfortable diagnostic option for many pets.
When Is an Ultrasound Recommended?
Your veterinarian may recommend an ultrasound if your pet is experiencing:
- Vomiting or diarrhea that won't resolve
- Weight loss or decreased appetite
- Elevated liver or kidney values on blood work
- Abdominal pain or bloating
- Changes in urination
- Unexplained fever
- Suspected masses or tumors
- Fluid in the abdomen or chest

- Heart disease (with specialized cardiac ultrasound)
Ultrasound is also an excellent next step when blood work or X-rays indicate a problem but more information is needed to reach a diagnosis.
